Be Aggressive

Today’s picture is intentionally off-kilter and not very focused, but only because the main draw was a high school girl’s volleyball team. It just feels like a really weird and awkward thing, taking pictures of teenagers I don’t know… but they were by far the best part of my night.

One of the gyms we play at hosts high school practices on half of the courts while our league plays on the other half. Tonight, after our game, I did some laps around the track and observed the kids in their practice (while hoping to re-learn how to play). Their coach was pushing them and yelling at them, the way coaches do. And like teenaged girls do, they were getting annoyed and frustrated. So the coach stops the practice and says, “Now it’s time for you all to be aggressive and try to take out some of your frustration on me.” He grabbed a chair, set it in the middle of the court, and had the girls practice their serves. The coach’s goal was for his players to practice their serves, but the girls’ goal was to bean their coach in the head with a volleyball. As the coach sat there with a fake scowl on his face (he was laughing, too), the girls’ faces brightened with every serve. Some of them came really close to hitting the coach – and a few did, but on bounces – but no one managed to hit him straight on. Still, it was nice to see the change in the team’s temperament once they started to have fun again.

If only there were a way to bring that magic to our adult team…
