About The Human Vacuum

Hi, and welcome to Confessions of a Human Vacuum! My name is Lindsay, aka “The Vacuum.” The nickname came about sometime in the late 90s (yoi), from my parents. Back before food photography was a “thing,” I was taking my camera with me on every culinary adventure and eating everything in sight. Were the pictures good back then? Not really. But the food was good, and I like that I can look back now and remember meals that I ate on trips that I took 15 years ago… which brings me to where I am today.

The purpose of this blog is, quite simply, to find the best thing about my day and blog about it so that I can remember it for years to come. Some days are crappy – that’s a given. But even on the crappy days, there’s something to be thankful for, even if it’s just the fact that you woke up. I’m all about celebrating even the smallest victories.

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for most of my life (excluding a year-long stint in Paris), and most of my days revolve around work, food, the gym, and volleyball. I’m kind of, sort of obsessed with volleyball – I play a minimum of two nights a week, and much of my free time is devoted to conditioning myself for it or thinking up game plans. Speaking of free time, I don’t have much since I work two jobs – one full-time job in Downtown Pittsburgh, and another part-time job as a wedding and special events bartender. I love both jobs, so I plan on them both remaining a large part of my life for the foreseeable future. And really, in a world where so many people are without a job and unable to make ends meet on their own, I’m often very grateful for the jobs I have.

Finally, the one thing that I focus on most frequently is FOOD. I love it. All of it. Too much of it, maybe. I love trying new restaurants in and around the Pittsburgh area, and I enjoy coming up with my own recipes from time to time. Food is often the best part of my day, so I write about it a lot. I wouldn’t dare classify myself as a “food blogger;” I’ll reserve that term for people who are much better at creating recipes and photographing their experiments – there are some amazing food bloggers out there! I would, however, consider myself a foodie, and I love taking pictures of both my own creations and restaurant meals. I firmly believe that the best way to experience a new place is through food, so occasionally you’ll even see some travel stuff on here. Yay!

If you see a yellow Labrador Retriever round these parts, that’s Taco! His real name is Jackson Cash (named after the Johnny Cash & June Carter song “Jackson”), but he just looks like he should be named Taco, so it’s kind of stuck. It’s his unofficial name, and the only name I ever call him. Taco lives with my parents about an hour away from Pittsburgh, but I see him fairly often. It’s usually the highlight of my day when I see him, so he gets quite a bit of blog exposure.

Aww, aren’t you sweet, and maybe a little creepy? If you want more of this good lovin’, you can follow me on Twitter, shoot me an Email, or leave a comment on this site. I’ll do my best to get back to you!
